Finidi George, the Super Eagles head coach, says the team’s current squad can break “all records” set by the older generations.
Finidi spoke at a press conference in Lagos on Thursday.
The 52-year-old played for the Super Eagles for over a decade. He was part of the Eagles squad that won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and participated in Nigeria’s debut at the FIFA World Cup that same year. Many Nigerian football fans often describe the squad as the “golden generation” as their achievements elevated Nigeria to the fifth-best national football team in the world according to FIFA rankings in April 1994.
Ever since, Nigerians have waited for another generation of Super Eagles squad to improve on the achievements of the 1994 team.

However, Finidi said the current Eagles roster has the “quality” to “do better than the 1994 generation.”
He added that the squad is already on the path to such achievements and can be a greater set of players with the proper guidance.
“The current Super Eagle can do better than the 1994 generation. They are getting there. The 1994 team grew together for some years until it climaxed in 1994,” Finidi said.

“You see this squad, it was their first time at Cote d’Ivoire and they’ve gotten silver. We will push them so that the next outing will be gold.
“With the quality that these players have, I think they can all records.”
