Fire damages stadium of Obafemi Martins’ Chinese club

A fire outbreak has damaged the stadium of Shanghai Shenhua, the club of Nigerian football star, Obafemi Martins.

The fire which started at 8:30am destroyed a large portion of the 33,000-seater stadium.

Nobody was hurt in the fire incident which was successfully contained.

Authorities in Shanghai’s Hongkou District are investigating the cause of the fire.

Shanghai Shenhua, managed by Gus Poyet, may have to relocate for their next home fixture.

Hongkou Stadium was China’s first professional football stadium when it was opened in March 1999.

Martins signed for the team on February 18, 2016.

On May 15, 2016, he scored his first goal for the Chinese Super League side in a 5-1 win over Guangzou.

Since his move, the Nigerian striker has scored nine goals in 29 games.
