More than 50 shops have reportedly been destroyed by fire at the Bayan Tasha market in Damaturu, capital of Yobe state.

The fire began at about 2am on Tuesday after electricity was restored to the area, at a time all the shops were closed, according to an eyewitness.

The intervention of fire service personnel helped to prevent the fire from spreading to residential areas.

An unnamed official of the state fire service said the fire was put out following a distress call.
