Fire outbreak hits Lagos community — a year after similar incident

Some shanties situated in Okobaba, Ebute Metta area of Lagos state, have been razed by fire.

The incident reportedly started around past 7:00pm at Kano street on Sunday.

The cause of the fire had not yet been ascertained as of the time of filing this report.

A similar incident occurred a year ago, affecting five buildings, a bakery, and many shanties.

Jebba, Okobaba, Tapa, Coates, and Kano streets were among the areas razed by the inferno.

Following the incident, several victims were reportedly rendered homeless, leaving residents to sleep at the burnt site, Okobaba football pitch, and Okobaba sawmill for days.

Efforts to reach Nosa Okunbor, spokesman of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) proved abortive as he didn’t respond to calls.

On Thursday, a fire outbreak occurred at the Oando petroleum tank depot in Bonny Road, Apapa area of Lagos.

According to OVH Energy, the company behind Oando retail brand in West Africa, the fire outbreak took place at OVH Energy, Terminal 1, Apapa in the afternoon.

OVH Energy disclosed in a tweet that preliminary information from the fire incident showed that it emanated from a tank within the terminal.

The fire was successfully put out on Saturday afternoon after operatives of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) contained the fire.
