Abdulganiyu Jaji, the controller general of the Federal Fire Service (FFS), says petrol tanker owners should install anti-spill locks to prevent explosions.
Speaking at a career progression training for FFS personnel in Abuja on Thursday, Jaji noted the need for stricter safety measures in transporting petroleum products.
His call follows recent tanker explosions that have claimed lives and destroyed property across the country.
“Fuel tankers are not just ordinary vehicles. They carry life-threatening cargo that, if mishandled, can lead to devastating accidents. The installation of anti-spill locks is no longer optional—it is an essential measure that must be adopted immediately,” he said.

“This simple yet crucial mechanism will reduce the risk of explosions and save lives.”
Jaji urged the federal ministry of transportation to enforce stricter regulations and ensure tanker drivers have valid licences.
He also called for better training programmes and regular safety checks.

“The stakes are too high for lax regulations; tanker drivers must undergo periodic evaluations to meet professional standards,” he added.
He announced plans for a partnership with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to raise awareness and enforce compliance with new safety measures.
“Public education on these issues is essential. Tanker owners, drivers, and the public must be made fully aware of the dangers and the urgent need for compliance with these new regulations,” he said.
Jaji told personnel that the training programme was designed to equip them for greater responsibilities and leadership in emergency management.

“This is about preparing you for greater responsibilities and leadership in emergency management,” he added.
He also thanked Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the minister of interior, for his support in repositioning the service.
On officer welfare, Jaji dismissed claims of neglect, stating that trainees were provided with accommodation and two daily meals.
“Despite our efforts, some personnel have been spreading lies about their conditions here, claiming they are stranded and hungry,” he said.

“I challenge anyone here to prove me wrong. If any of you have been excluded from these provisions, stand up and speak now. But I know the truth, and I know that we are providing for you.
“I am not discouraged by these criticisms. As an administrator, I understand that every criticism is an opportunity for growth. It only makes me more determined to continue the work we have set out to do, to equip you with the best skills and knowledge. The welfare of our officers will always be my priority.

“Our mission is clear. We will continue to train, innovate, and uphold the highest standards of firefighting. Together, we will meet the challenges ahead.
“Since the inception of this programme, we have successfully trained over 330 officers between 2023 and 2024, with 114 currently enrolled in 2025. These officers span ranks from GL 04 to the rank of controller general of fire.
