Fire service: We saved N1.94trn worth of property, responded to 30k emergency calls in 2024

Abdulganiyu Jaji, the controller general of the Federal Fire Service (FFS), says the service saved property worth N1.94 trillion and responded to over 30,000 emergency calls in 2024.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Friday, Jaji said the agency also saved 30,890 lives and recorded an estimated property loss of N67.1 billion.

He added that over 100 lives were lost in fire-related incidents during the year, including devastating petrol tanker explosions and fires at markets, filling stations, and religious centres.

He reiterated that the primary focus of the agency remains on public safety, particularly preventing fire outbreaks and mitigating the devastating effects of such incidents across the country.

“Currently, we are in the harmattan season when humidity is low and the risk of static spark or gas explosion can spread rapidly,” Jaji said.

“Fire is a delicate and dynamic force that requires us to be more cautious and vigilant.

“At this point, I implore all operators of fuel stations, petrol tankers, gas refilling stations, gas cylinder consumers, and the general public to follow safety protocols and regulations.”

He said the service will introduce technologies to enhance response times and prevent fires, adding that the national fire detection and alarm system (NAFDAS) and the N-alert fire alarm will be deployed for the purpose.

He also praised the proactive steps taken by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whose administration approved the procurement of advanced firefighting equipment and the renovation of the National Fire Academy Sheda to better equip the service.

Jaji commended Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the minister of interior, for his strategic leadership and the reforms being implemented under the renewed hope agenda, which he noted have already resulted in positive outcomes.

He called on stakeholders to support the repeal and re-enactment of the outdated Fire Service Act of 1963, which he believes would significantly enhance the effectiveness of the FFS in its mission.
