First Bank to hold golf tournament in Lagos, reaffirms commitment to sports development

First Bank has announced the 63rd edition of its amateur open golf championship in efforts to support sports development.

The international tournament is organised under the bank’s first@sports initiative, the company said in a statement on Monday.

According to the financial institution, the event will hold from November 18 to November 24, 2024, at the golf club of the Ikoyi Club 1938 in Lagos.

The bank said the tournament reaffirms its commitment to sports development and nation-building.

“For over six decades, FirstBank has been a driving force in promoting sports in Nigeria, with a focus on golf, polo, and tennis,” the statement reads.

“The FirstBank Lagos Amateur Open Golf Championship stands tall as Nigeria’s most esteemed international golf tournament, attracting top amateur golfers from around the globe.

“This revered competition has become a springboard for success, propelling aspiring professionals to greatness.

“Many past winners have ascended to the elite professional class, while others have discovered their potential within the tournament’s nurturing environment.

“The championship provides a global stage for amateur golfers to showcase their skills, earn valuable World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) points, and propel their careers.”

FIRST BANK INTRODUCES TWO NEW TOURNAMENT COMPONENTS

According to the bank, the 63rd edition introduces two new components aimed at broadening participation.

“Search for 4 Stars – empowering 150 young aspiring male & female golfers aged 18-30, currently working as caddies at Ikoyi Club,” First Bank said.

“Championship Kitty – allowing golfers with a handicap of 10 and above to participate, promoting inclusivity and diversity.”

In addition to the main events, the bank said the corporate golf challenge for charity will continue this year, with proceeds from team entry fees going to various charitable causes under the FirstBank spark initiative.

Tade Adekunle, golf captain at Ikoyi Club 1938, expressed excitement about hosting the event.

He said he is confident that the 63rd edition would continue to uphold the excellence of previous tournaments.
