Five dead, 15 missing after Jigawa boat mishap

Five persons have died in a boat accident in Jigawa state.

The Jigawa police command said the mishap occurred on Thursday at Nahuce in Taura LGA.

Lawan Shiisu, the command’s spokesperson, said a heightened search effort is under way to rescue 15 missing passengers.

“Today, at about 1200hrs, information from a reliable source revealed that a canoe conveying 20 passengers to cross over Gamoda River at Nahuce village capsized,” he said.

“Upon the receipt of the report, a team of policemen, in collaboration with local divers and good Samaritans, raced to the scene for a rescue mission.

“The deceased passengers are Abdurra’uf Mohammed, 15, Suleman Ali, 20, Shafiu Mohammed, 25, Ado Nafance, 7, and Alasan Mohmmed, 16, all from Taura LGA.”

Ahmadu Abdullahi, the state’s police commissioner, offered condolences, while seeking divine comfort for the families of the victims and eternal rest for the deceased.

On July 8, a boat accident in Jigawa resulted in two fatalities. Rescuers saved the lives of 18 others.
