Five dead, two hospitalised in Ondo after ‘eating poisonous pap and fish’

Five persons, including a woman and her four grandchildren, have died in Akure, Ondo state capital, after eating poisonous pap and fish.

The incident reportedly happened at Atayese street, Gaga area, off Idanre garage, Oke Aro in Akure.

A neighbour to the deceased, simply identified as Isaac, said two kids who also shared in the meal are still receiving treatment in hospital.

“We were told that they took poisoned pap, but later, we also heard that they ate from fishes in a pond in the compound which was said to have been contaminated,” Isaac said.

Egunjobi, the head of the family, also confirmed the incident, adding that the victims might have eaten fish from a contaminated pool.

Meanwhile, Funmi Odunlami-Omisanya, police spokesperson in Ondo state, said the case has not been reported to the command.

“As I speak with you, the police do not have such reports at hand. We have not heard of the incident,” Odunlami-Omisanya told TheCable.

In June, a man identified as Eric and his girlfriend were found dead at an apartment located at Ayeyemi area of Ondo town in Ondo state.

The lifeless bodies of the lovers were reportedly found stuck together.

A witness said the lovers might have been electrocuted as a generator was switched on at the apartment and “a phone was seen charging on a socket placed on the bed”.
