Five Kenyan policemen arraigned for ‘helping serial killer’ escape

Prosecutors have arraigned five Kenyan police officers on charges of allegedly helping a suspected serial killer escape from a police station in Nairobi, the capital.

The Gigiri police station is known for its high security due to its proximity to several embassies, sparking speculation about possible security breaches or collusion.

Collins Jumaisi, the suspected serial killer, and 12 Eritreans broke out of the station on Tuesday through a cutout wire mesh roof, police reports said.

Jumaisi was arrested last month in connection to the bags of severely mutilated female bodies found after the police a manhunt Tuesday at a dump site after the violent anti-tax protests in Kenya.

According to police, the 33-year-old whom they called a “psychopathic serial killer with no respect for human life” had admitted to murdering 42 women, including his wife, who he acknowledged as his first victim.

“Our preliminary investigations indicate that the escape was aided by insiders,” Gilbert Masengeli, acting national police chief, said.

Prosecutors asked the court on Wednesday to detain the policemen who were on duty during the jail break, for two weeks.

They said the time would allow officers to complete an investigation into their alleged involvement.

Prosecutors also asked the court for more time to collect statements, scoure CCTV footage, and examine the policemen’s phones.
