Gunmen attacked a ship belonging to a Polish cargo company, off the Nigerian coast, and abducted five sailors, according to Reuters.

The agency quoted Witold Waszczykowski, Polish foreign minister, as saying that the kidnappers have not made any demand.

“No traces of blood were discovered on the ship, which operates under the Cyprus flag,” he was quoted as saying.

“The rest of the crew, 11 people, are still on the ship and they are safe… The ship suffered some damage.”

Waszczykowski added that his country would not get directly involved in the bid to secure the release of the captives, unless asked to do so.

“This is a responsibility of the sovereign state of Nigeria,” he said.

The exact location and date of the incident were not mentioned but Marek Grobarczyk, the country’s maritime minister, said the area was not traditionally frequented by pirates.

“The ship is currently anchored around 30 sea miles – roughly 56 kilometers – off the Nigerian coast, with the operator arranging for a new crew to take it back to port,” Reuters said in its report.
