Flood kills five in Yobe

Five persons have been confirmed dead, after the recent flood that ravaged communities across Yobe state.

Several persons are also said to have sustained injuries, while two persons are reportedly missing.

Confirming the development in a statement by Mamman Mohammed, spokesman to the governor, Buni commiserated with the families of victims of the flooding incident.

“The Yobe state Governor, His Excellency, Hon. Mai Mala Buni, has commiserated with the victims of the flood disaster in the state,” the statement reads.

“The governor described as very sad and unfortunate the death of five persons in this natural disaster that swept away some houses and farmlands.

“Governor Buni directed the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to intensify search for two persons reportedly missing, and provide victims who sustained injuries with medical support.”

Over the weekend, the governor had asked officials of the ministry of environment and the state emergency management agency (SEMA) to find safer locations for persons in riverine communities.

“The ministries of environment and works are also directed to consider creating more channels to enhance the follow of the rain water to reduce flooding,” Mohammed said.

“He assured the assistance of government to provide safety measures for the people and succour to the victims. He urged the vulnerable communities to move to safer locations and to cooperate with government officials providing support.

“Governor Buni prayed to Almighty Allah to forgive the shortcomings of the departed souls and provide succour to the survivors.”
