Flood sweeps man away in Ondo as communities seek govt intervention

One person has reportedly died in the flood that ravaged communities in the Oba-Ile area of Akure, the Ondo state capital.

NAN reports that the victim, identified as Glory was swept away by the flood on Friday while returning from work.

Confirming the incident on Sunday, Gbenga Ojuloge, assistant secretary of the landlord association of Bethel estate, Oba-Ile, said urgent intervention is needed to drain the water channels to avoid future occurrence.

Ojuloge said the waterways have become a death web that claims lives every year, adding that efforts made by the community to empty the channels have yielded the desired results.

The flood which started on Friday due to heavy rainfall submerged many areas and cut off access to several roads in the community.

“We are using this opportunity to draw the attention of government at all levels to what is going on in our community,” he said.

“This is the main access road to the community but the flood is already taking what we have used our sweat to construct.

“Everything you can see on the bridge was done by the landlords in the community, but we discover that the flood will just come and push everything away. So we are calling on the government to come to our aid.

“On Friday, we lost a person here. This is because all the waters coming from Ijapo, Alagbaka and Oja-Oba are passing through here. So immediately it rains, there is no access to our community again.”
