At least 200 inmates have reportedly escaped from the Maiduguri correctional centre following severe flooding in the capital city on Tuesday.

On Tuesday, residents of Maiduguri were overtaken by floods following the collapse of the Alau dam, which has been at full capacity for the past few weeks.

The dam, which last collapsed on September 13, 1994, displaced about 400,000 residents.

Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication focused on the Lake Chad region, quoted security sources as confirming the incident.

The publication said the floodwaters ravaged the facility’s security, damaged barriers, and weakened its structure, leading to the escape of the inmates.

Makama said authorities have launched a manhunt to locate and recapture the escapees.
