Flying Eagles fly past Sudan in Omdurman

Victor Osimhen snatched a late winner for Nigeria’s Flying Eagles to beat home team Sudan 2-1 n Sunday in a 2017 Under-20 AFCON qualifier at the El Merriekh Stadium in Omdurman.

Sudan’s Young Falcons held their own for most part of the clash against a Flying Eagles side parading several stars from the victorious FIFA Under-17 World Cup team, Wolfsburg’s Osimhen.

The home team were the first to get in front, against the run of play, challenging Amuneke’s U17 world champions to dig deep and fashion a comeback on the night.

The Junior Falcons held onto their lead until the break, but nimble-footed Samuel Chukwueze equalised for Nigeria in the 67th minute.

Chukwueze nearly put Nigeria in front minutes later but was thwarted by the Sudanese goalie.

Osimhen, who got the Flying Eagles in front against Burundi in Calabar in the last round, would have the last laugh by scoring Nigeria’s winner in the 86th minute through a well-taken penalty kick, .

He came close to making it 3-1 in injury time but his shot was smothered by the goalkeeper.

The return leg will take place at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos on Sunday, July 24.
