On Saturday, the electorate in Edo state will troop out to cast their votes for their preferred candidate in the governorship election.

To succeed Godwin Obaseki, the incumbent governor, 17 political parties are fielding candidates. However, all eyes are on three major contenders battling for the number one seat in the state.

During the campaigns, the leading candidates — Asue Ighodalo, Monday Okpebholo and Olumide Akpata — repeatedly trumpeted their strengths and capabilities. They reeled out manifestos, made promises and vowed to turn Edo into “a promised land” if elected.

With campaigns and politicking out of the way, the business end of election season inches closer.

Will Ighodalo be able to retain the coveted seat for the governing PDP? Given his party’s influence and experience in grassroots politics, will Okpebholo win the election and recapture power for the APC after eight years in the shadows?

Or will Akpata be able to use his experience in the legal world to sway voters, who are desirous of a change, to his side?

On election day, there is bound to be intense scrutiny of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in terms of availability of materials, timely voting, performance of technology in accreditation, collation and announcement of results.
