Babajide Sanwo-Olu, governor of Lagos, has announced a series of interventions to support residents of the state amid a raging economic hardship worsened by rising inflation in the country.
On February 15, Nigeria’s data bureau said inflation rose to 29.9 percent in January 2024 — up from 28.92 percent in the previous month.
This was triggered by a food inflation rate of 35.4 percent, jerking up prices of staples exponentially.
Speaking during a media chat with journalists on Thursday in Lagos, Sanwo-Olu said his government will open up Sunday markets in at least 42 markets to provide succour to residents.

He said the government is also constructing four food hubs to proffer a new way of food distribution in the state and tackle rising food costs.
“We will open Sunday Markets in at least 42 identified markets across Lagos State. You will be able to buy food items at a discounted price. You will only need to buy items worth up to N25,000,” the governor said.
“Coupled with the one at Idi-Oro, Mushin, four more food hubs are under construction and 7 other locations in other local governments have also been identified for more food hubs to be developed.”
