Foundation asks FG to ‘refrain from internet disruption’ during protests

Protesters calling for an end to bad governance and economic hardship in August

Dataphyte Foundation, a media advocacy, has called on the federal government to restrain from internet disruption during protests.

The organisation said this will protect citizens’ digital rights, and freedom of expression, and enhance their ability to organise.

On August 1, Nigerians began experiencing difficulties in making calls or accessing the internet, amid the planned #EndBadGovernance protest.

Downtimes have persisted throughout the week of the demonstrations.

Bosun Tijani, minister of communication, said the government has no hand in the network disruptions.

In a statement on Wednesday, Femi Amele, programmes director of Dataphyte, said the interruption of information across digital channels undermines citizens’ ability to organise peacefully and hold government to account.

Amele appealed to the government to engage with citizens constructively and transparently, while empowering the LGs to ensure food security.

He urged citizens to use their digital platforms responsibly and engage in peaceful and constructive dialogue to promote democratic growth and stability.

“In these challenging times, it’s crucial to recognise the significance of digital rights and freedom of expression,” the statement reads.

“Digital rights and freedom of expression are fundamental to any democracy, particularly during periods of civil unrest.

“The government must show restraint in communication clampdowns, in the form of internet disruptions, as essential services and the very fabric of democratic engagement depend on the availability of communication channels.

“Furthermore, in response to the looming food crisis, we highlight the need for enhanced governance at the local government level, particularly in delivering interventions aimed at tackling food insecurity in the country.

“We urge all citizens to use their digital platforms responsibly, advocating for their rights and needs, and engaging in peaceful and constructive dialogue to promote democratic growth and stability.

“Dataphyte Foundation remains committed to supporting initiatives that enhance digital rights, freedom of expression, and good governance, contributing to a more resilient and democratic Nigeria.”
