Four die in Lagos auto crash caused by driving against traffic

Four persons died after a jeep plying one way ran into a commercial bus at the Lekki Epe expressway in Lagos state.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said the accident occurred in the early hours of Sunday.

In a statement, Adesina Tiamiyu, general manager of LASEMA, said 16 people were also injured severely as a result of the accident.

“The agency was alerted at about 6.49 am on a distress call via the emergency toll free line 112/767 regarding an accident at the 1st Gate inward Oriental Hotel along Lekki Epe expressway on Sunday 11th of March 2018,” the statement read.

“This prompted the immediate activation of the agency’s response team, other emergency responders and the security operatives to the scene of the incident accordingly.

“A total of four fatalities was recorded which includes three adult male and an adult female. 16 casualties with severe injuries were recorded including 4 adult female and 12 adult male. The driver of the jeep was transported to the general hospital at marina.”

“Emergency/security operatives were involved in traffic management measures to forestall the occurrence of a secondary accident, crowd control, giving medical care to the casualties and subsequently moved them down to the general hospital at marina and trauma centre at toll gate for further treatments.

“The (two adult male) who died at the scene were subsequently handed over to SEHMU while the remaining two (an adult male and an adult female) were later confirmed dead.”

Adesina advised motorists to endeavour to drive with caution when using the highways.

He said drivers should abstain from drinking alcohol before plying roads to avoid unnecessary loss of lives.
