Four of Akeredolu’s appointees — including commissioner — resign

Four political appointees of Rotimi Akeredolu, the late governor of Ondo, have tendered their resignations.

The resignations came hours after Akeredolu’s passing.

Akeredolu died on Wednesday at the age of 67.

The Ondo government said Akeredolu died of “complications from protracted prostate cancer”.

The appointees who have resigned are Raimi Olayiwola Aminu, the commissioner for infrastructure, lands, and housing (pictured); Richard Olatunde, chief press secretary to Akeredolu; Dare Aragbaiye, special adviser on union matters/special duties; and Doyin Odebowale, senior special assistant on special duties and strategy.

Aminu said his decision to resign is hinged on his conscience.

“I write to tender my resignation of appointment as the Commissioner for Infrastructure, Lands and Housing with effect from today, 28th December, 2023,” Aminu wrote.

“This decision is anchored on my conscience, as my leader and dear boss, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu, SAN, CON, joined the Saint Triumphant.

“I sincerely thank our dear Arakunrin and the good people of the State for the opportunity to serve in his cabinet as Senior Special Assistant on Lands & Infrastructure, Special Adviser on Lands, Works and Infrastructure and Commissioner for Infrastructure, Lands and Housing.”

Hours after Akeredolu’s death, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, his deputy, was sworn in as the new governor of Ondo.

Before his death, Akeredolu embarked on a couple of medical leaves to Germany.
