Four players and the president of Palmas, a Brazilian fourth-tier football club, died on Sunday after a small plane taking them to a cup game crashed on take-off.

It is understood that the plane came down a few moments after take-off and crashed into the ground at the end of the runway.

In a terse statement, the club said Lucas Meira, its president, alongside Lucas Praxedes, Guilherme Noe, Ranule, and Marcus Molinari, died in the crash, adding that there was no survivor.

“The plane took off and crashed at the end of the runway at the Tocantinense Aviation Association. We regret to report there are no survivors,” Palmas wrote on Instagram.

It was gathered that the club was heading for Goiania — about 500 miles away — ahead of its cup tie against Vila Nova billed for Monday when the crash occurred.

“In this moment of pain and consternation, the club asks for prayers for the families and will provide the necessary support [for them], and stresses that, at the next appropriate time, it will give further information,” the statement ended.

The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) is said to have postponed the cup tie in the wake of the sad incident.

Tributes have since been pouring in for Palmas as reports of the tragedy spread.

In a statement on its Twitter page, the Federation of International Federation of Association (FIFA) condoled with the families of those who died in the crash.

“FIFA offers its condolences after a plane crash tragically claimed six lives in Brazil – including five members of Palmas Futebol e Regatas. Football extends its deepest sympathies to the victims and their families at this difficult time,” it wrote.
