Four-year-old dies of Ebola in Uganda — second confirmed fatality

A four-year-old child has died in Uganda from the Ebola outbreak, marking the second confirmed case in the East African country.

Speaking on the development in a statement on Saturday, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said the child passed away on February 25.

The statement said the incident happened at the Mulago referral hospital in Kampala, Uganda’s capital.

“Our teams are working with @MinofHealthUG and partners to strengthen surveillance, active case searching, contact listing and tracing, infection, prevention and control in health facilities, case management and community engagement to halt the spread of the virus,” the WHO said.

No further details were given about the death.

The Sudan Ebola outbreak in Uganda was declared on January 30.

On January 31, authorities said one person – a nurse – died seeking treatment at various medical facilities after developing fever-like symptoms in Kampala.

Tracing contacts is key to stemming the spread of Ebola, and there are no approved vaccines for the Sudan strain of Ebola that is infecting people in Uganda.

Ten districts, including Kampala, Wakiso, Mukono, Luwero, Mbale City, Mbale District, Iganga, Jinja City, Jinja District, and Kakumiro, have been identified as high-risk areas.
