The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says between January and March 2023, 24 deaths were recorded from 166 road crashes in Gombe state.

NAN reports that Felix Theman, Gombe FRSC sector commander, spoke in an interview on Friday.

Theman said 518 people were involved in the crashes, adding that 354 sustained various degrees of injuries while 140 were unhurt.

The sector commander said the crashes were a result of wrongful overtaking, failure to obey the speed limit, overloading, use of phones while driving, and underage driving.

He expressed dismay at the rise in the number of underage drivers in the state.

“The corps has stepped up enforcement in that regard to ensure that children don’t engage in any form of driving on roads which could lead to crashes and fatality in some cases,” the sector commander said.

He said 33 offenders were booked for use of phones while driving and 18 underage drivers were cautioned within the period under review.

“Motorists have a responsibility to ensure safety on the road, so drive for you to be alive,” he said.
