Hyginus Omeje, Lagos sector commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), says it is unlawful for fresh applicants for drivers’ licence to drive without completing the process and obtaining a licence.

Omeje said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, said new applicants, must not drive until completion of the process and obtaining a temporary licence.

“Valid drivers’ licence is the only certificate that qualifies anyone to be called a driver all over the world,” he said.

“Things must be done in the proper way; carnages on our roads must be reduced to the barest minimum as it has been revealed that most drivers do not attend driving schools.

“For a fresh applicant to obtain a valid licence, he must attend an FRSC approved driving school for 26 days and spend at least one hour for training daily.”

He added that the same process was applicable for the professional drivers caught with fake licence, noting that they would not be allowed to drive until they obtained a temporary licence.

Omeje said after the training, a certificate would be issued which would be presented at the Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS) and the Motor Vehicle Administration Agency (MVAA) offices.

He said after that, the VIS would conduct another mini-training to confirm if the driving school had done a good job in testing the applicant’s ability before going for other checks.

“They are also required to go to a general hospital for a blood pressure check, eye test, epilepsy and tests for other internal diseases that can affect their frame of mind while driving,” he said.

He added that after the verification by the VIS office, the applicant would pay and go for data capturing to obtain a temporary drivers’ licence.

“This will allow him to drive for few months before the issuance of a permanent licence,” he said.
