Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, former governor of Kano, has revealed why he didn’t attend the inauguration ceremony of Abba Kabir Yusuf, his successor.

On Monday, Yusuf was sworn in as the 19th governor of Kano at the Sani Abacha stadium.

Speaking during an interview published by BBC Hausa on Tuesday, Ganduje who travelled to Abuja for the inauguration of Bola Tinubu as president, said he didn’t attend the ceremony back home because he and his successor were members of different political parties.

He said he wanted to prevent their supporters from clashing during the event.

“The inauguration ceremony is made up of two things. First is the handing over of documents of how the state was governed including completed projects and those that are yet to be completed. Second is the swearing in like you saw,” Ganduje said.

“Therefore if the political parties of the outgoing and incoming governors are different, it’s not necessary for the outgoing governor to attend the inauguration ceremony because sometimes if this is done, chaos erupts as a result of clash between supporters,” he added.

The former Kano governor said he is not looking for any appointment in President Tinubu’s cabinet.

“I am not looking for any appointment. But, if I am offered any, I would take it,” he said.

“I wish him (Tinubu) well and will continue to pray to Allah to help him because people voted for him because of the belief that he will emulate the things he did in Lagos state while he was governor and because he is a true democrat.

“His victory is also our victory because we supported him.”
