Femi Gbajabiamila, majority leader of the house of representatives, says the lower legislative chamber has not directed banks to lift the restriction imposed on the accounts of Patience Jonathan, former first lady.
On Tuesday, Uzoma Nkem-Abonta, chairman of the house committee on public petition, directed six banks to unblock Jonathan’s accounts.
“Until EFCC proves otherwise, I’ll ask you to remove the precautionary restriction on the account. Let me tell you, whatever you’ll do, you must follow the law. A bank can’t hold a legal entity to ransom,” Nkem-Abonta had said.
“I want to order all other banks that all the accounts that have no specific pending order from the courts, please release them.”

But in a tweet on Wednesday, Gbajabiamila said the report of the committee would be a debate on the report when the house resumes next week.
“Contrary to reports the house has not made a decision [un]freezing of bank accounts. The committee report will be debated on resumption,” he tweeted.
“For those who follow @HouseNGR proceedings I have argued on the floor over the years that the @HouseNGR is not a law court and public petitions cannot be used to entertain all matters considering the doctrine of separation of powers.”
