Six dead in Ghana gas station explosion

Not fewer than six people were killed and 35 injured after a truck carrying natural gas caught fire in Accra, Ghana, leading to an explosion in GOIL, a state-owned gas station.

The explosion which reportedly occurred at about 7.30pm on Saturday was said to have spread to a Total petrol station across the street.

Billy Angalatey, spokesman, Ghana national fire service, said: “As we speak, six people are dead due to this fire.”

Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, deputy information minister, said, “Unfortunately, there are some fatalities and we are working to have the numbers.”

Nkrumah further said the initial blaze was largely under control and that about 200 police officers had been sent to the scene.

Reacting to the incident, Nana Akufo-Addo, Ghana president, sent his condolences to the families of the deceased and the injured victims.

He said the news had left him devastated.

Meanwhile, the Accra city authorities have warned people to avoid the area, which is also home to the University of Ghana campus.
