Ghana suspends 22 ‘corrupt’ judges

The disciplinary committee of Ghana’s judicial council has suspended 22 judges in the country over allegations of corruption.

The council said the affected judges were accused of bribery after they were allegedly captured on video.

A total of 180 court officials are facing removal procedures following evidence of extortion against them.

Anas Aremeyaw, an investigative journalist with Crusading Guide, a Ghanaian newspaper, released the video last week and petitioned President John Mahama and Georgina Wood, the country’s chief justice, to remove the judges from office.

Following the expose, the judicial council held an emergency meeting and recommended the suspension of the 22 junior judges as part of the investigation process after taking initial responses from.

“The council fully reckons that the perception, or actuality of corruption in the Judiciary undermines confidence in the institution and cannot be tolerated to continue in any shape, or form, hence the need to act with utmost dispatch,” read a statement issued by the council.
