‘Giant leap to energy sufficiency’ — Oyo speaker commends Makinde over power project

Adebo Ogundoyin, speaker of the Oyo house of assembly, says the newly inaugurated hybrid power plant project in the state portrays the Seyi Makinde-led administration’s commitment to improving the lives of citizens.

Ogundoyin spoke in Ibadan, Oyo state capital, on Friday at the inauguration of the power project at the government secretariat.

The speaker described the project as “a giant leap in delivering sufficient energy to the state”.

The project, a 10MW gas-fired power generation and 1MW PV solar solution, will provide reliable electricity to key facilities in the state, including government offices, healthcare facilities, schools, and economic hubs.

“The commissioning of the first phase of the 11MW Oyo state power project (IPP) by Governor Seyi Makinde is another promise kept,” Ogundoyin said.

“This is another significant milestone in the efforts of Governor Seyi Makinde to address the problems of inadequate power supply.

“It is a giant leap in energy sufficiency, and we are proud to be part of this journey towards a brighter future for our state. This project is a game-changer for Oyo state.

“It demonstrates the governor’s commitment to providing sustainable energy solutions and driving economic growth.”

The speaker noted that the project is expected to boost the state’s energy supply by 14 percent, while bridging the power gap and empowering communities.

Ogundoyin added that the project will position Oyo state to become a model for energy innovation, attract investors, and drive economic growth in the country.

He also said the project will create opportunities for businesses to thrive in the state, adding that it is being executed on a build-operate-transfer (BoT) basis, with Elektron Energy financing and developing it.

“This is a critical step towards achieving our goal of making Oyo state a hub for economic growth and development,” the speaker said.

“We are grateful to Governor Makinde for his commitment to the people of Oyo state.

“This project is a testament to his administration’s dedication to delivering impactful projects that will improve the lives of our citizens.

“Additionally, it will provide public lighting for a 10 km radius under the ‘Light-Up Oyo’ project, enhancing security and economic development.”

The facilities expected to be powered by the project are Adeoyo Maternity Teaching Hospital, State Hospital Ring Road, Lekan Salami Sports Complex Adamasingba, among others.
