If a girl cannot pray for one hour, don’t marry her, says Adeboye

Enoch Adeboye, general overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), has advised youths of the church against marrying girls who are weak in prayers.

Fondly referred to as ‘Daddy GO’, Adeboye told young people in the church that a girl must be able to pray non-stop for at least an hour before being considered for marriage.

He also advised members of the church not to marry lazy girls or girls who cannot cook.

“Marry a prayer warrior! Any girl who cannot pray for one hour non-stop, don’t marry her,” he said.

“Don’t marry a girl who is lazy! You pay her family a surprise visit, and you see how she is doing… If she is lazy when she is single, what would happen if she is married?

“Don’t marry a girl who cannot cook, she needs to know how to do chores and cook because you cannot afford to be eating out all the time. Don’t marry a girl, who is worldly, if you do, you have carried what you will worship for the rest of your life.

“Don’t forget what I am telling you. It’s very important. There are those who I have advised before but ignored my advice. They later came back to me and said: ‘You warned us’. I am warning you now.”

Adeboye also advised Redeemed members not to marry from other churches, and warned pastors against keeping beards.

“Don’t ever marry outside the church and you have no reason to marry outside RCCG. The reason is that if you are both from the same church even when trouble comes it is easier for the pastors to handle it,” he said.

“I don’t want to see any of my pastors looking like fellows from the training camps of Al Qaeda. Any elderly person who cannot show the noble journey for the youth in terms of dressing is not worthy to be described as an elder.

“The youths are young and they don’t know where they are going, but if you watch closely you will find that they don’t know where they are going. They often look up to their fathers for direction but if a father himself does not know what he is doing then there something wrong.

“The youth don’t respect an elder that looks like them. You are supposed to be their guiding light after they have fooled around. Pastors should be clean shaven at all times and must not in any way grow beards that will portray them as persons of different persuasion.”

EDITOR’S NOTE: Adeboye made the remarks at a church programme in 2015.

  1. You are right sir…. may God continue to use you for his Glory….. but I don’t see anything bad in marriage between inter-churches. …. let’s put other churches at sides….what of Pentecostal churches like Winners or Gofamint or Christ Embassy of Deeper life….. this is my point sir… I wish you put it in consideration sir… Remain blessed

  2. It’s a matter of time when there will be religious acrimony in Yoruba land if we ignore this kind of man preaching hatred.

You may not realize this today but If this kind of call get to the skull of those his followers and think of what will happen in Yoruba land in the next 100 years when some of us may no be alive.

By then, no Redeemers will be in the same family with Deeper Lifer and Catholic and Anglican members will stand separate, not to talk of Muslims and other religious believer.

Unity would have disappear in our land and hatred preached today will take over the land.

Anyway, I don’t pray for such to happen but……….

  3. Please don’t get him wrong. What Daddy G.O is saying is that, you should marry a lady the same church (RCCG) or maybe other parish with the same DOCTRINE. And if you want to marry from other churches then after marriage the couple should attend the same church so that when ever the issue of marital conflict arise. It will be easier for the pastor to settle the matter. Rather than the groom pastor will say this and the bride pastor will say that. #ITisWELL

    1. He said what he said, no need for clarification. He wants to perpetuate the male dominance in our culture. I’m a christian and everything I believe comes from the good book, not from pastors. Christ died for my sins and I’ve been saved. I don’t need a pastor, let alone a Nigerian one, telling me how to live my life when Christ already did.

    2. Nigerians will never open thier brain. Yoour statement is is not necessary as it says nothing different from what your GO said. Why is it compulsory that husband and wife must attend same church. Are they both not Christians? If they have issue but going to diferent churches, does it different churches has different doctrine of resolving marital issues?

  4. Your comment..Is RCCG the only holiness church, of all Pastor Adeboye said, I didn’t support marriage within RCCG, its purely discrimination

    1. But you suppose to disagree with him on beard since Jesus and all his disciples have beard. Check bible story, from Adam to Jesus have beard

  5. He is a shepherd to millions of people. He’s the head that christ has placed over his church until his return. I dont think he should be catigated or clarified because he desires a particular kind of standard for his flock. He can determine what he wants. It ia however left for the sheep to do what they please…Christ came and said the word, some have chosen some and discarded some. Likewise daddy GO has said his, take it or leave it. We daily work out our salvation by ourselves. You might not agree or you may agree….but,it is ultimately your decision.

  6. Jesus christ came for all, he was not a memeber of RCCG, or christ embasy or cath , Anglican etc. So this church diferences talked about I don’t understand it. Christ taught us how to pray in the gospel. Sometimes u don’t need to pray all day before God answer, because his ears are not deaf it has to do with ou hearts. A woman can be a prayer warrior but her heart does not belong to Jesus, that becomes hypocisy. So let’s be careful on what we accept.

    1. I am in the same point with Mr Noble Patrick Jesus Christ die for all of us ,people should go and read Matthew 6 vs 7 .

  7. Daddy what u said is undiluted truth believer marrying from desam faith that really word of God. St. Paul warned believers not to marry unbelievers or outside desam faith. But where I need more clearification is about bears

  8. This is a sensitive matter and what the GO has said was just an advice to the RCCG member only and it was not mandatory.

  9. Can you guys pay more attention to the Word of God which is found in the bible rather than debate over what someone says or does not say. What is the bible’s yardstick,,? This is the reason why we keep getting it wrong. Go to the source and not to what he or she said

  10. What about the disciples of Jesus that could not pray an hour as hinted above, yet He went ahead and called them to be his companions? I don’t he is right on this point, may be we just take it as an opinion that is not actually binding

  11. I believe that a woman is like an onion, she is wired to multi task. When a man marries-his life should be better…spiritually, health wise, physically, socially.Few men eat well prepared meals after leaving their parents…but after getting married the wife continues nurturing them.I also believe a man should be a bit skilled at cooking…in case of an emergency at home.

  12. According to the article pastor Adeboye said,

    1. His members should not marry a lazy girl, a girl that cannot cook, or the one that cannot pray for one hour.

    2. That members should not marry from other churches.

    3. Pastors should not grow bears.
    4. Etc.

Well couples should be equal. One of the major things is for them to fill the gap in each other’s life. They are to assist each other.

If there are reasons why a man should not marry a lady of the above characters, a lady also should not marry a man that has any of the character.

There are good people in the church and also in the world – people like the good Samaria. God can show a man a lazy girl, a girl that cannot cook, or that cannot pray for one hour. God don’t think like man. Sometimes his solution may seem awkward.

Be sincere to yourself is it okay to ask members not marry from other churches and for pastor not to grow bears?

Many don’t know the meaning of “pray without ceasing”. This does not mean that one should pray every time. If you think good, say good things and do good always only good will come to you. This is praying without ceasing.

The general form of prayer is talk with God. Most people talk to God. If you talk with God you don’t even need ten minutes. If you ask God for a wife, he can tell you not now or go to your village or check that house, etc. If you talk to God then you can spend hours shouting so that he will attend to you.

The message connote that man is the head of woman. He is indeed. Christ was head indeed, he did nothing but served people. He said that he who will be the greatest among you let him be the servant of all. Husband is the head.

It is unloving, arrogant and bossy husband that will wait for the wife to come from work to cook his meals. Chores and cooking is the duty of man and wife.

Many will not like to agree that their pastor made mistake even when they know he did. That is a sin, to say black is white.

  13. This is the main problem with Christianity in Nigeria. Where there is a big different btw churches, those days anyone travelling n find herself/himself stranded in a strange land goes to any church for shelter but reverse is the case dis days. When U decide to try such, U would be asked ‘which church do U attend’ as Christians, was that how thy Lord taught us? I see nothing wrong for any lady to marry from another worship center, as long as U are a Christian.
