Poland vs Nigeria: Potential starting goalie and a glimpse into Rohr’s mind

The battle for Super Eagles number one goalkeeper spot remains unresolved.

Since Vincent Enyeama’s departure from the Nigerian national team, it’s been difficult to get a permanent replacement.

Ahead of the 2018 World Cup in Russia, fans and pundits would hope that a solution is in sight.

The trio of Daniel Akpeyi, Ikechukwu Ezenwa and Francis Uzoho are the goalkeepers invited by Gernot Rohr for the tune-up game against Poland on Friday.

This is how they stand:

Daniel Akpeyi (Chippa United)

He is the most experienced of the three goalies. Based on his form in the South African top flight, the Chippa United player has the needed ingredients to take the mantle, should it be handed to him.

Francis Uzoho (Deportivo La Coruna)

Uzoho is young, athletic and confident. The Aspire Academy product has made great strides in the A and B teams of Deportivo La Coruna.

He put up a superb performance on his Eagles debut in the 4-2 win over Argentina.

Ikechukwu Ezenwa (Enyimba FC)

Ezenwa’s performance in the World Cup qualifiers, WAFU Cup and African Nations Championship (CHAN) earned him many admirers.

Although he just returned from injury, his experience may be pivotal if selected.

A glimpse into Rohr’s mind

Rohr, a former Niger Republic gaffer, is assertive, clever and experienced enough to opt for a goalie that fits his tactical setup for the friendly game.

Although his body language appears to favour Uzoho ahead of Akpeyi and Ezenwa, any of the three goalkeepers is capable of getting the nod.
