It’s going to be a little bit difficult, Lasun tells ‘coup plotters’

Yusuf Lasun, deputy speaker of the house of representatives, says democracy at its worst is still the best form of government.

Speaking on Monday at a one-day public hearing on proposed further amendments to the electoral act 2010, Lasun wondered why some military personnel would be considering taking over power after 18 years of democracy.

He said those plotting to topple democracy would experience a little difficulty.

“It might be trivial or right but what we have had in the last two weeks, not because of the position we occupy but because of the level we are in Nigeria today,” the deputy speaker said.

“Having practised democracy for 18 years unbroken I wouldn’t know why some military people want to think that it is time again to come back to the governance of Nigeria.

“It is going to be a little bit difficult; democracy at its worst is still best form of government.”

On Tuesday, Tukur Buratai, chief of army staff, warned soldiers to stay off politics.

“This is to inform the public that the chief of army staff (COAS), Nigerian Army, Lieutenant General TY Buratai, has received information that some individuals have been approaching some officers and soldiers for undisclosed political reasons,” a statement by Sani Usman, army spokesman, had read.

“On the basis of that, he has warned such persons to desist from these acts.”
