Gombe United striker Abbani wins VAT wonder goal award

Gombe United forward, Sani Abbani, has emerged winner of the ninth edition of the VAT wonder goal award.

This week, it was a close race as Abbani narrowly edged Sunshine Stars’ Joseph Abiodun while Abu Azeez of Shooting Stars came third.

Interestingly, Sand Eagles star, Azeez, took a chunk of the votes cast on Twitter, gathering 53 percent of the total 305 votes but was far behind on the NFF website polls where he picked just 50 of the total 1008 votes.

Abiodun came in at second place in all the polls but was unable to secure sufficient numbers to upstage Abbani who finished bottom of the lot on Twitter.

Votes on the NFF website were nearly evenly shared between Abbani and Abiodun but it was the Gombe United player that carried the day with a total of 524 bringing his tally to 582.

Abbani won the award for the goal he scored against Maiduguri side El-Kanemi Warriors on match day 28.

He will receive a cash reward of N150, 000 and is expected to nominate a charity in his state to which he will donate half of the prize money.
