Yakubu Gowon, former head of state, has reaffirmed his support for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) as the scheme marks 50 years in operation.

The retired general met with the newly appointed NYSC director-general Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu, in Abuja, on Tuesday.

Gowon praised the NYSC’s role in promoting national unity, youth empowerment, and development.

He recalled the initial opposition to the scheme at its inception in 1973 but noted that it has since become a widely accepted institution contributing to Nigeria’s progress.

The former leader commended the contributions of corps members over the years and lauded the NYSC’s deployment policy, which exposes participants to diverse cultures across the country.

He urged Nafiu to build on the foundation laid by his predecessors and continue strengthening the scheme.

In response, Nafiu described the NYSC as a “divine project” that has positively impacted generations of Nigerians.

He expressed gratitude for Gowon’s mentorship and sought his guidance in his new role.

The NYSC was established by Gowon in the aftermath of Nigeria’s civil war as part of national reconciliation and rebuilding efforts.

Over the past five decades, it has played a crucial role in fostering integration and providing young Nigerians with work experience.
