Gridlock on Lagos-Ibadan expressway as gas pipeline ruptures

There has been a gas pipeline leak around Arepo, Magboro, leading to traffic congestion on Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

The incident, according to a witness occurred around 9:30am on Wednesday, and caused panic among residents of the area.

The leak was said to be as a result of excavation works ongoing on Lagos-Ibadan expressway by Julius Berger.

Kehinde Hamzat, commander, Lagos-Ibadan-Egbeda corridor of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), in a statement confirmed that there was a case of pipeline leak around Magboro area.

“We have a case of gas pipeline explosion around Punch Newspaper, Magboro. The pipeline got bursted while men of Julius Berger, the construction company working on Lagos-Ibadan expressway were escavating a surface for Worksite,” he said.

“This has led to a standstill traffic situation on both sections of the expressway. Motorists are advised not to panic as professionals are being contacted to take care of the situation.

“For people who have a time-bound activities may explore alternative routes and for those who can postpone their trips, let us endeavor to do so while the situation gets controlled.”

A traveller also confirmed there is traffic congestion beginning from Berger axis of Lagos-Ibadan expressway owing to the incident.
