Group calls for stakeholder collaboration on implementation of Abia disability law

The Advocacy for Disability Act Cluster (ADAC) has called for collaboration from stakeholders in Abia state.

Grace Jerry, ADAC cluster anchor, made the clarion call after the Abia disability rally this week.

The cluster anchor, who is also the executive director of inclusive friends association (IFA), said the rally was one way to bridge the knowledge gap between the people and government, and create awareness on the plight of People living With Disabilities (PWDs).

“The implementation of the Abia state disability law requires a multi-stakeholders’ approach and not a responsibility of government alone,” she said.

“The private sector, traditional institutions, religious institutions and families of PWDs must all come together to implement the provisions of the disability law.

“Adhering to the provisions of the Abia state disability law in line with the inclusive agenda of the government will no doubt improve the lots of PWDs in Abia.

“ADAC considers the importance of information strategy towards ensuring sustainability of the disability commission in Abia.”

ADAC also called on government agencies in Abia to make sure that health, education, and transport services are accessible to disability clusters.

ADAC urged the Abia government to ensure adequate budgetary allocation to the commission in order to enable the group discharge its responsibilities.

The group commended Alex Otti, Abia governor, for creating the office of the special assistant to the governor on vulnerable groups and poverty alleviation, and the appointments of PWDs into his cabinet.
