The Prisoners Rehabilitation and Welfare Action (PRAWA) has trained officers of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) in the federal capital territory (FCT) on “appropriate” sanctions for offenders amid COVID-19 pandemic.
The training, PRAWA said, was on guidelines for the supervision of those serving non-custodial sentence and for punishment of violators.
Non-custodial sentence refers to convictions that do not require serving prison term.
In a statement on Tuesday, Ogechi Ogu, deputy director of the organisation, said it presented a new manual for non-custodial prison officers on the supervision of offenders during the pandemic.

The scope of the guideline include the principles and rationality of punishing violations; safety; protection and compliance with health protocols; recommended sanctions for violations and other criminal infractions.
Others are supervision of offenders in non-custodial custody, preparing pre-sentencing report for courts and for progress of offenders.
Ogu said 38 participants attended the training sponsored by the European Union, British Council and Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption (RoLAC).
