Groups oppose call for Zakzaky’s release

The National Committee of Yoruba Youth (NCYY) and the Coalition of Civil Society Groups against Terrorism (CSCAT) have reacted to the demand of Femi Falana, human rights lawyer, that Ibrahim Zakzaky, leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), should be released.

Falana had written a letter to Acting President Yemi Osinbajo, explaining the need for the IMN leader and Sambo Dasuki, former national security adviser (NSA), should be let off the hook.

Both men have been in detention since 2015.

In a statement jointly signed by Odeyemi Oladimeji, president of NCYY, and Atani John, coordinator of CSCAT, the groups said the Shi’ia sect which Zakzaky leads poses a threat to the nation’s security.

“As patriotic Nigerians, we are deeply concerned that some respected Nigerians can be at the vanguard of those calling for his release,” the statement read.

“The federal government should immediately set up machinery, for the prosecution of Zakzaky,  his sponsors,  patrons and  everyone involved in the assassination attempt on the life of the chief of army staff.

“An organisation that held the people of Kaduna state and environs hostage for many years should be held responsible for its action.”
