Groups submit memorandum to presidential panel on Nigerian Army

Members of the National Committee of Yoruba Youth and the coalition of Civil Society Groups Against Terrorism in Nigeria on Monday submitted a memorandum to the committee probing allegations of human rights abuse against the armed forces.

In August, Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo inaugurated a seven-man judicial commission to review the compliance of the military with human rights and rules of engagement.

The commission headed by Biobele Georgewill, a justice of the court of appeal, is expected to submit its report to the presidency in 90 days.

At the Ikeja high court in Lagos, where the panel is sitting, members of the group said they were there not just to submit the memorandum but to also brief the panel about their observations of “spurious allegations” against the armed forces.

Addressing journalists at court premises, convener of the group, Oladimeji Odeyemi, said the overwhelming vote of confidence, by Nigerians on the armed forces, is “our way of boosting their morale and saying thank you, to these patriotic Nigerians, who have to give all they have, for Nigeria and Nigerians”.
