Dolors Sala Carrio, mother to Pep Guardiola, Manchester City coach, has died after contracting COVID-19, the club announced on Monday.

COVID-19 is a disease caused by the coronavirus. Carrio passed away in Barcelona at 82.

In a tweet, the club said: “The Manchester City family are devastated to report the death today of Pep’s mother Dolors Sala Carrió in Manresa, Barcelona after contracting coronavirus. She was 82 years old.

“Everyone associated with the club sends their most heartfelt sympathy at this most distressing time to Pep, his family and all their friends.”

The sad news was greeted by an outpouring of condolences from across social media platforms.

Khaldoon Al Mubarak, chairman of the club, said in a statement: “Our prayers and heartfelt sympathies are with Pep and his family at this overwhelmingly sad time. He and they have the love and support of the entire City family.”

Dolors was married to Valenti, Pep’s father, and was also mother to the Man City boss’s two older sisters and younger brother Pere, a football agent.

Guardiola had donated €1 million in March to Angel Soler Daniel Foundation, which is linked to the official college of doctors of Barcelona to help its fight against coronavirus in Spain.

He also issued a video as part of the club’s Cityzens At Home initiative, urging fans to stay at home and to follow the advice of scientists, doctors and nurses.
