Gunmen abduct catholic priest in Imo

John Ubaechu, a Catholic priest, John Ubaechu, has been abducted by gunmen in Imo state.

Ubaechu, the parish priest of Holy Family Catholic Church in Izombe, Oguta LGA, was reportedly taken on Sunday evening along Ejemekwuru road while on his way to the priests’ annual retreat.

A statement issued on Monday by Patrick Mbarah for the archdiocesan secretariat appealed to Christian faithful and the public to pray for his safe release.

Meanwhile, Henry Okoye, spokesperson for the Imo state police command, said officers had launched an investigation to track down those responsible.

“The Imo State Police Command has launched a comprehensive investigation to identify and apprehend those responsible for the abduction of John Ubaechu along Ejemekuru Road in Oguta LGA on Sunday, 23rd March 2025,” Okoye said.

“The Command urges the public to assist in the investigation by providing any relevant information. Such information can be reported to the nearest police station or communicated via the emergency lines at 0803 477 3600 or 0815 802 4755.”

He added that an “intelligence-driven operation” was underway to facilitate the possible rescue of the priest.
