Gunmen abduct students from Kaduna private varsity in yet another attack

Some gunmen have abducted an unknown number of students from Green Field University in Kaduna state.

TheCable understands the gunmen attacked the school at about 11 pm on Tuesday.

They were said to have opened fire to scare away residents before kidnapping the students.

It is not immediately clear the number of students taken hostage; a security guard was reportedly shot in the process.

The private university is located along the Kaduna–Abuka highway in Chikun LGA, one of the hotspots of banditry in Kaduna.

Samuel Aruwan, the state commissioner of internal security and home affairs, confirmed the incident.

“Confirmed but we will issue a statement after receiving feedback from security agencies,” he said via a text message.

TheCable has also contacted Mohammed Jalige, Kaduna police spokesman, but has not yet had a response.

The latest incident makes it the third attack on a school in the state in 2021.

Five weeks ago, bandits stormed UBE primary school at Rama in Birnin-Gwari LGA, days after a similar attack.

They had earlier attacked Federal College Of Forestry Mechanisation in Igabi LGA, abducting 39 students, 10 of whom have regained freedom.

Parents of the 29 students still in captivity have continued to stage protests, asking the state government to negotiate with the bandits to secure their children’s release.

They had also threatened to reach out to the bandits after it became clear the state government would not dialogue with the attackers.

Nasir el-Rufai, Kaduna governor, had insisted it will not take such measure, warning of its consequences.
