Gunmen abduct PDP chieftain in Akwa Ibom

Suspected gunmen have abducted Eyo Edet, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in Akwa Ibom.

The victim, popularly known as Eyo Aswang, was abducted on Monday in Oron LGA at a filling station he owns.

NAN reports that the suspected kidnappers took Edet into a Toyota Sienna and later moved him into a speed boat.

The abductors who set the Toyota Sienna ablaze before speeding off into the creeks, were yet to contact Edet’s family as of the time of filing this report.

Confirming the incident, Odiko Macdon, police spokesperson in Akwa Ibom, said an investigation has been launched into the incident.

He said Olatoye Durosinmi, commissioner of police in the state, who ordered an investigation into the matter, visited the scene where the vehicle was burnt by the abductors.

“Investigations have commenced already and I’m sure the perpetrators will be brought to book in no distant time,” he said.

In a similar development, some gunmen also abducted Mathias Opara, a Catholic priest, in Imo state.

A witness said the priest was kidnapped while returning from the burial ceremony of a colleague’s father at Izombe community in Oguta LGA.

The gunmen reportedly double-crossed and kidnapped the priest alongside some people in the vehicle.
