Gunmen attack Kogi community, kill six

The Kogi police command says six persons were killed, while some properties were razed, following an attack by gunmen on Bagana community of Omala LGA in the state.

Idrisu Dabban, commissioner of police in Kogi, confirmed the incident to journalists on Wednesday, after a visit to the area.

The attackers were said to have invaded the community on Monday and targeted the palace of Anyebe Salifu, a traditional ruler.

According to NAN, a witness, Yakubu Salifu, identified as the son of the traditional ruler, said the assailants invaded the community at about 7:30am when many residents had gone to the farm and headed straight to his father’s palace.

The attackers were said to to have set the palace ablaze, and killed several persons, including one Achebe Alih, popularly known as ‘Mama Teacher’.

Salifu was also said to have described the attack as the possible fallout of a clash involving Bagana and Patani communities over land ownership.

Another witness said the attack may not be unconnected to a clan said to be unsupportive of the traditional ruler.
