Terrorists kill 44 in ‘barbaric’ Burkina Faso attacks

At least 44 people have been killed after two deadly attacks in Burkina Faso villages.

Rodolphe Sorgho, governor of the Sahel region, said the “despicable and barbaric” attacks were launched by armed terrorist groups on Thursday and Friday.

He called on people to remain calm, saying the terrorists had been “put out of action” and that the government was stabilising the area.

Although the region has been overrun by militant groups linked to the al Qaeda and Islamic State (IS), it is unclear which of the groups carried out the attacks.

Burkina Faso has since 2013 witnessed violence triggered by a separatist uprising in neighbouring Mali.

Thousands of people have been killed in the crisis and more than two million have been displaced. The violence has led to significant political turbulence in the country.

The unrest triggered two coups last year.

The military had pledged to stabilise the country but has so far failed to stem the killings.
