Gunmen kill police officer in Benue

The Benue state command of the Nigeria police force has confirmed the killing of Baba Ibrahim, an assistant superintendent of police (ASP), by gunmen in the Katsina-Ala area of the state.

Austin Ezeani, the police public relations officer (PPRO), told NAN in Makurdi on Thursday that the late officer was the head of a special police task force on cattle rustling in the state.

He said the inspector-general of police inaugurated the task force to curtail rising cases of cattle rustling.

Ezeani explained that unknown gunmen who came to the Katsina-Ala cattle market in a Toyota vehicle with the inscription ‘NAND’, attacked the deceased within the market, on Wednesday.

He disclosed that the assailants shot six other members of the team who are currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital in the community.

He said the command had commenced a systematic raid on criminal hideouts and gun-running syndicates to flush out criminal elements in the state.

The police spokesman said the command would ensure that the culprits were arrested and brought to book.

Ezeani also said the three police officers, including security guards, who were on duty at Radio Benue when hoodlums broke in and carted away valuables, have been arrested.

In the early hous of Tuesday, hoodlums invaded the Benue owned medium, stealing money and other valuables.
