Unidentified gunmen have killed two policemen in Obubra local government area of Cross River state.
Irene Ugbo, spokesperson of the state police command, confirmed the development to TheCable, on Wednesday.
She said while two policemen were killed and another was injured, the gunmen went away with two rifles belonging to the officers.
Ugbo said it was not clear if the gunmen are members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), but added that investigation into the incident has begun.

“It is unknown gunmen. We don’t know if they are IPOB or not. They killed two police, injured one, and took away our two rifles. Not until investigation proves that it is IPOB, for now, we don’t know if they are the ones,” she said.
“There was no clash between the police and gunmen. The police are vulnerable to any attack. We are at the frontline. We don’t fight anybody. Rather, the society fights us because the bad people feel that we are stopping them from carrying out their evil deeds. So, the police is always the first target, which recently we have been trying to avoid.”
This development is coming less than one week after four police officers were killed by gunmen along MCC road in Calabar, the state capital.

Egbe Edum, an assistant commissioner of police, was also attacked and killed hoodlums in the state capital in December 2020.
