Gunmen raze second Abia police station in 72 hours

Unknown gunmen have razed the Bendel divisional police headquarters in Abia state.

The attackers were said to have invaded the station on Wednesday night, before opening fire on police officers present.

It was not immediately clear if there were any casualties in the incident or the extent of damage done.

TheCable contacted Geoffrey Ogbonna, spokesman of the police command, but has not yet had any response.

Wednesday’s incident occurred three days after some hoodlums razed some police assets when they attacked a station in Ikwuano LGA of Abia.

It is also the latest in a series of attacks on security and government facilities, not just in Abia but in other parts of the south-east and south-south.

On Tuesday, hoodlums burnt the office of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NLDEA) in Amaekpu in Ohafia LGA.

Two days earlier, gunmen also razed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office in Ohafia.

At least four police stations were attacked over the weekend in various parts of southern Nigeria.

There is no confirmed cause of the attacks yet, but TheCable found out that killings in the south-east tripled after the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) launched a security arm — the group denies any wrongdoing.

The federal government recently approved new security measures to be deployed to restore peace in the south-east and south-south.
