Erling Haaland scored twice as Manchester City, defending English Premier League (EPL) champions, began another defence of their league title with a clinical 3-0 win over Burnley in the opening match of the 2023/24 league season at Turf Moor stadium on Friday night.
Haaland led Pep Guardiola’s side to another opening-day win with two first-half goals against Vincent Kompany’s side.
The Norwegian striker, who had failed to get a goal in his last six competitive matches, scored with his first shot of the match. He added another in a repeat of his two-goal EPL debut last season.
It was a day of learning for Burnley who are returning to the EPL after just a season away in the championship, as they tried in vain to replicate Man City’s style of play.

The Etihad club continued to dominate in the second period as they put more gloss on the result with the third goal through Rodri on 75 minutes. The midfielder lashed into the roof of the net from close range following a free-kick delivery.
Anass Zaroury, a substitute introduced on the hour, got a straight red card for a high tackle on Kyle Walker, ensuring Burnley ended their first game on return to top-flight football with ten men.
This latest victory is Man City’s 12th consecutive win over Burnley in all competitions.
