‘He is a builder of champions’ — Osoba, John Momoh celebrate Abiodun Shobanjo at 80

Biodun Shobanjo, chairman of Troyka Holdings, has been described by leading figures in the marketing communications industry and prominent Nigerians as a “builder of champions” and a “great motivator”.

The tributes came during a surprise birthday event organised in honour of Shobanjo who turned 80 on December 24, 2024.

The event, organised by “Shobi Collective,” a group of his former employees of Insight Communication, mentees, and friends, was held on December 21 in Victoria Island, Lagos.

The industry leaders also called on citizens to emulate the patriotism, passion, and dedication exemplified by Shobanjo.

John Momoh, chairman of Channels Television, praised Shobanjo’s mentorship and unwavering support during the challenging early years of the station.

“He is someone I will pick his call any time of the day because I know he had picked one or two things while watching Channels television and wants to make some suggestions for improvement, whether it is in programming, presentation or content,” Momoh said.

Segun Osoba, former governor of Ogun state, described Shobanjo as a reliable brother and friend who values relationships and cultivates it across socio-economic strata.

“He has never failed to attend any of my family events in Nigeria or London for decades now,” Osoba said.

Funmi Onabolu, chairman of Cosse TTL and a former general manager at Insight Communications, described Shobanjo as a “great motivator” and a “builder of men” who has significantly influenced the careers of numerous individuals excelling in various fields worldwide.

Udeme Ufot, chairman of SO&U Advertising, attributed his professional success to the training and mentorship he received during his years at Insight Communications.

Steve Omojafor, an advertising veteran and former chairman of Zenith Bank, described Shobanjo as a “builder of champions” who brought respect and dignity to the marketing communications industry in Nigeria.

“You stand tall in your personality, you stand tall in the industry, you stand tall in your contributions to Nigeria and Africa,” Omojafor said.

In response to the tributes, Shobanjo expressed gratitude for the recognition and described himself as “the luckiest man on earth”.

“If I die tomorrow, I will dance to heaven,” he added.

He described his 53-year journey in advertising as “very interesting” and expressed satisfaction in passing the baton to the younger generation.
